More than half of Ukrainians do not use cars: survey results
Almost 51% of households in Ukraine do not own a single car. The largest number of car-free households was recorded in the East of the country - 57.2%, and the smallest number - 39.4% - in the West. These data were obtained by the Info Sapiens research agency, which conducted the survey commissioned by the NGO Vision Zero.
The survey results show regional differences. The highest level of motorization is observed in the western regions of the country - almost 60% of respondents, of whom 49.3% have one car and 10.5% have two or more. In Kyiv, 50.3% of households do not have any cars, 37.6% have one car, and 11.5% have two or more cars.
The lowest level of motorization is recorded in the South and East. More than 56% of households in the South do not own a single car, almost 32% own one, and almost 11% own two or more cars. In the East, the situation is as follows: more than 57% of households do not own any cars, almost 33% own one car, and 9.5% own two or more cars.

According to the study, the largest number of households with cars is in cities with a population of up to 50 thousand people (58.3%, of which 11.9% own two or more cars). The largest number of car-free households (58.6%) was recorded in cities with a population of over 500 thousand people. The exception is Kyiv, where a higher than average share of families own cars.
Viktor Zagreba, head of the NGO Vision Zero, comments that the survey results show the high importance of public transport and the need to strengthen Ukraine's public policy on its preservation and modernization. "We understand that in the Verkhovna Rada and the Office of the President, the level of car ownership in households is about 100%, so the thoughts and attention of decision makers are focused on cars and roads. However, in the context of Ukraine, the vast majority of people live without cars, and our politicians need to keep this in mind. Most Ukrainians depend on public transport, and it has been degrading over the past 5 years and has no government support," the organization said.
The Info Sapiens agency conducted a sociological survey from January 11 to January 19, 2024, commissioned by the NGO Vision Zero. The CATI method (computer-assisted telephone interviews) was used to interview respondents based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers.
The study covers almost all of Ukraine, except for the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Luhansk region, as well as certain temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kharkiv regions where there is no connection.
The sample of the study is 1000 interviews. The sample is representative of the population of Ukraine over the age of 16 by gender, age, region, and settlement size. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 3.1% with a probability of 0.95%.
