"An Integrated Vision for the Dnipro River"
"An Integrated Vision for the Dnipro River" is a study in which leading experts from Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe and Ro3kvit: Urban Coalition for Ukraine analysed the untapped potential of the river and explored future scenarios for the restoration of the areas adjacent to the basin.
The study outlines three potential scenarios for the future of the Dnipro River:
- Return to 2021: Restoration of the Dnipro River to its 2021 state by reconstructing destroyed bridges and dams. This scenario includes ecological developments, accessible embankments, preservation of cultural heritage, and improvement of water quality through modern water and wastewater treatment technologies.
- Redesigning damaged streams: Adopting environmentally friendly solutions for places where structures and flows are damaged or outdated. This approach takes into account different needs and outcomes depending on river conditions.
- Return to nature: Restoring a river's natural, historic course by abandoning reservoirs and hydropower plants. This scenario promotes the development of flora and fauna, supports new natural parks and protected areas, strengthens cultural identity and reduces industrial and domestic pollution.
The teams believe that the second scenario is the most promising for the future of Ukraine and the Dnipro River.
The study also provides data on the impact of the Dnipro on the energy system, in particular, in sections 2.5 Water and Energy Nexus; 3.2 Energy Insecurity; 4.4 Sustainable Energy System.
