The Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy – putting European transport on track for the future is one of the fundamental documents of the European Union in the field of sustainable mobility and the fight to reduce the impact of human activity on the environment, approved by the European Commission on December 9, 2020.
The main focus of the document is to reduce the impact of harmful emissions from transport and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which should lead to solving mobility problems in European cities, improving the quality of life and the environment.
The measures envisaged by the document are to be implemented until 2050, with the following stages to be completed over this period:
- By 2030, at least 30 million cars and 80,000 zero-emission trucks should be in operation in the European Union.
- By 2050, the majority of private cars, commercial and public transport, as well as new heavy vehicles, will be zero-emission.
- Zero-emission ocean-going ships and large aircraft should be ready to enter the market by 2030 and 2035, respectively.
The strategy also envisages the introduction of stricter requirements for internal combustion engines (Euro 7 standard), an increase in the length of electrified railways and a number of other comprehensive changes in transport and mobility.
Given the current challenges and tasks, this document is relevant for Ukraine, both in terms of post-war reconstruction and European integration processes, which will require harmonisation of Ukrainian legislation and construction standards with European ones.
