Six Ukrainian cities are preparing activities for European Mobility Week
The annual European Mobility Week will take place in six Ukrainian cities from September 16th to September 22th 2023. It has a goal to promote sustainable mobility, public transport, and the use of renewable energy sources.
The main motto of Mobility Week in 2023 is "Save Energy!". The official website of the event explains how exactly energy is related to the mobility:
1. Public transport has a huge potential to reduce energy consumption. The amount of energy that is used by one passenger for 1 km by public transport is significantly less than for the same distance by a private car.
2. The distance up to 5 km around the city can be passed on foot or by bicycle. It will take up to 30 minutes and will save energy as well as improve physical and mental health.
3. The annual cost of owning a private car is often underestimated. The energy costs for running a private car can be up to €4,500 per year.
4. A 10 km/h reduction in urban traffic speeds can reduce fuel costs by €60 per year.
5. Mobility management has the potential to reduce collective energy consumption by encouraging behavioural changes among employees, students, customers, and visitors.
6. Mobility infrastructure is not just about roads and traffic services. Improving existing and creating new infrastructure that encourages the use of alternative transport, such as walking, bicycles, and public transport, is crucial to eliminate incentives to use private cars.
In total, the European Mobility Week events will take place in more than 1700 cities and towns in 39 European countries, with the largest number of events in Spain (308), Turkey (251) and Austria (209). Some cities outside of Europe will also join the The European Mobility Week: Argentina, Ecuador and Japan.
Ukraine will be represented by six cities - Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Poltava, Uzhhorod and Zhytomyr. If you live in one of these cities, join the suggested events and support the development of sustainable mobility in Ukraine!
The European Mobility Week has been organised traditionally since 2002.
