New project on electric public transport
NGO "Vision Zero" and the Association "Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine" are launching a new one-year project to promote the modernisation and development of electric public transport in Ukrainian cities by including it in public policy documents, modernisation and rehabilitation plans.
The project will include an analytical review of European sectoral documents, national practices and the development of proposals for changes to public policy that need to be made to Ukrainian legislation as a part of the European integration process.
The expert team of the NGO "Vision Zero" will support the Association in developing projects and components on sustainable urban mobility, collecting and disseminating relevant information on preparing and conducting training webinars, round tables and other events.
Electric public transport such as trams, trolleybuses, and battery trolleybuses are one of the most sustainable means of urban mobility with the lowest pollutants emissions and greenhouse gases. State and international support for the modernisation and development of this mode of transport is critical to achieving Ukraine's climate goals and fulfilling other international commitments on the path to European integration.
According to the NGO "Vision Zero", Ukraine is already among the countries in Europe with the largest number of electric public transport systems: 41 trolleybus systems and 18 tram systems. In total, before the Russian full-scale invasion, Ukraine had 1734 kilometres of tram tracks and 2314 trams, as well as 4397 kilometres of trolleybus lines and 3889 trolleybuses.
The cooperation project between "Vision Zero" and EECU is supported by the European Climate Foundation and will run from 1 August 2023 to 31 July 2024.
