NetZeroCities helps Europe in its ambition to achieve climate neutrality. The project comes in support of the EU’s Mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030” and provides cities with world-class expertise and services tailored to their needs.
NetZeroCities assists cities to overcome the current structural, institutional and cultural barriers they face in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
In 2023, 53 pilot cities have been selected to implement systematic and locally developed innovative measures covering a range of areas from buildings to waste and change instruments including governance, finance and policy. Throughout their two-year journey, the cities will reflect and learn, enabling other cities to follow in their footsteps, scaling up approaches and solutions that are appropriate to their context.
In total 159 cities from 33 countries of the EU and associated countries of the Horizon2020 applied to the program. There were 103 applications, 53 of which were selected to participate in the programme NetZeroCities.

What does this mean for Rivne?
The Rivne City Council will receive a grant of UAH 38 million (EUR 973 thousand) to combat climate change. The money will be disbursed in stages over two years. The European funds will be managed by the Department of Economics, which is to set up a working group consisting of project managers and curators.
Thanks to the grant, the community plans to implement new, more environmentally friendly approaches to lifestyle and work, improve transport, modernise buildings, energy systems, waste management. Among other things are:
- The creation of a community energy passport;
- The development of scenarios for the city’s transition to zero CO2 emissions by 2050;
- Training and promotion of energy efficiency through municipal educational institutions.
The programme also includes interaction with the level of the community. In particular, discussions and training of condominium chairpersons on the basics of energy efficiency are planned.
We wish Rivne community to successfully achieve its goals and encourage other communities to apply for international projects!
