A useful tool for communities affected by war is a calculator for estimating the amount of waste from destruction
Ukraine has created an online calculator that can count the number of pieces of a destroyed building, according to the Ecorubryka.
The calculator allows you to estimate the amount of waste generated from destruction by two indicators: the type of building and the area of construction or destruction. You can calculate the total amount of waste from a building or by individual components - concrete, brick, wood, related waste, etc.
Waste can be calculated for:
- apartment buildings
- private houses
- buildings of secondary and preschool education institutions
- buildings of healthcare facilities
The system also takes into account combustion processes and calculates the amount of asbestos-containing materials if they were used during construction.
This tool will help assess the extent of waste from the destruction that has not yet been dismantled. As a result, it will be easier for communities to plan the costs of dismantling, logistics and storage.
The calculator is available on the website of the Ukraine Support Team (UST) coalition at the link: https://ustcoalition.com.ua/kalkulyator-rozrahunkovoyi-kilkosti-vidhodiv-vid-rujnuvan/
The online calculator was developed by the Ukraine Support Team (UST) coalition in cooperation with the Ukrainian IT company GlobalLogic.
The calculator was developed on the basis of the Guidelines for estimating the amount of waste from demolition, created by experts from the organization ReThink, which is a member of the UST coalition. The Methodology is based on the Japanese approach, which derives the rate of waste generation from destruction per 1 square meter depending on the type of building.
The calculator will generate more specific data for the state to understand where and how to build recycling infrastructure. Currently, official statistics are based on the amount of demolition waste that has been dismantled and taken to temporary storage sites.
