The European Energy Award (EEA)

The European Energy Award (EEA) is a quality management and certification system for municipalities and regions. It supports local authorities in implementing interdisciplinary planning approaches and effective energy and climate policy measures. The EEA has the following objectives:

To build a system for continuous improvement of the organisational and administrative capacity of local governments to effectively implement sustainable energy policies in their communities;
Use of European tools for assessing the organisational capacity and current state of local authorities and development of an action programme;
Provide advisory support in the implementation of the action programme;
Audit of the local government system and awarding of a certificate upon reaching a certain level of compliance;
Establishment of a depository of best practices of EEA participating local authorities;
Communication and exchange of experience between participating local authorities from Ukraine and other countries;
Promotion of cities that have received the award among potential investors at the international, national, regional and local levels;
Building a network with government institutions and synergies with related ITA initiatives and programmes.

In 2018, following a two-stage selection process conducted by the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine (SDC/SCO) and the International Office of the European Energy Award (EEA), the Association of Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine (AEECU) was recognised as the National Office of the European Energy Award in Ukraine. A Memorandum of Cooperation and a Licence Agreement have already been signed between the Association and the EEA, which will allow the implementation of the planned steps within the framework of a specially developed methodology.
